झालो असतो न्यूटन आम्हीही ...

झालो असतो न्यूटन आम्हीही,
पण आमच्या इथे सफरचंदाचे झाडच नाही

हे असले झाड कुणीतरी लावावे लागते
लावून त्याला खत-पाणी घालावे लागते
नंतर मग ते झाड फळ देऊ लागते
भुकेल्याना अन्न, थकलेल्याना निवारा
आणि विचारवंतांना विचार देऊ लागते

ह्या झाडाचे बीज असते उत्सुकतेचे
त्याला पाणी लागते खुल्या विचारांचे
खत लागते प्रयोगांचे
आणि ऊन लागते विश्लेषणाचे

आमच्या इथे पुर्वी असली झाडे होती
सफरचंदाची नव्हे तर चांगली आंब्याची होती
आता मात्रा अशी झाडे उरली नाहीत
सफरचंदाची लावली नाहीत आणि आंब्याची टिकवली नाहीत

आमच्या झाडांना कीड लागली पूर्वग्रहदुषित विचारांची,
अंधळ्या भक्तीची, अर्थशून्य अभिमानाची
आणि दुसर्‍याच्या अंधानुकरणाची

आता असल्या झाडांऐवजी धार्माभिमानाची इमारत बंधतात
त्या खाली विचारवांतांच्या डोक्यात, वरुन फक्त धोंडे पडतात

आंब्याची कोय सोडा, पण सफरचंदाचे बीजही आमच्याकडे नाही
झालो असतो न्यूटन आम्हीही,

On Bal Thackeray and Kasabs right to have a defense counsel

Read Bal Thackeray's interview in Saamna. The statement that attracted me was Bal Thackeray speaking about murder of democracy. :)

Anyway the interview was about Bal Thackeray expressing his views on Anjali Waghmare taking the role of defense lawyer of the terrorist who caused havoc in Mumbai. In the interview he also ridiculed the role of Human Rights Activists.

I salute the heroes who laid their lives for the country. I sympathize with the innocent victims who lost their lives in the episode. And I am as angry as Mr. Thackeray on Kasab and his team who are responsible for the attack. But I am not against Mrs. Anjali Waghmare or anyone else representing Kasab in the courts of India.

The role of defense lawyer is to represent the accused. His job is not to accquit the accused but to make sure that he gets the punishment that he deserves and nothing more. This role is highly important because it brings out a lot of facts of the case which the public prosecutor may not highlight or for which the public prosecutor may not have any incentive to highlight. The facts and arguments which are brought forward by defense lawyer will make the case complete. Denying Kasab the right to defend himself is not only against the pillars of our constitution but also rejects the right of nation to know "complete" facts of the case. Who knows why kasab did what he did .. who knows he might have some history which may point finger to some of our own system which might be responsible for what he did. If we have to avoid more kasabs and more attacks the nation has to address those systems.

I hope Mr. Thackeray and those who oppose the right of Kasab to have a defense counsel understand this before they agitate.

पण या देवालयात, सध्या देव नाही

गाभारा आहे, चांदीचे मखर आहे.

सोन्याच्या सम्या आहेत, हिर्‍यांची झालर आहे.

त्यांचही दर्शन घ्यायला हरकत नाही.

वाजवा ती घंटा, आणि असे इकडे या

पाहीलात ना तो रिकामा गाभारा?

नाही..तस नाही, एकदा होता तो तिथे

काकड आरतीला उठायचा, शेजारतीला झोपायचा,

दरवाजे बंद करुन, बरोबर बाराला जेवायचा

दोन तास वामकुक्षी घ्यायचा

सार काही ठीक चालले होते.

रुपयांच्या राशी, माणिक मोत्यांचे ढीग

पडत होते पायाशी..

दक्षिण दरवाज्याजवळ, मोटारीचे भोंगे वाजत होते

मंत्र जागर गाजत होते

रेशीम साड्या, टेरीनचे सुट समोर दुमडत होते.

बॅंकेतले हिशेब हरीणाच्या गतीने बागडत होते.

सारे काही घडत होते.. हवे तसे

पण एके दिवशी.. आमचे दुर्दैव

उत्तर दरवाज्याजवळ अडवलेला

कोणी एक भणंग महारोगी

तारस्वरात ओरडला "बाप्पाजी बाहेर या''

आणि काकड आरतीला आम्ही पाहतो तर काय

गाभारा रिकामा

पोलीसात वर्दी, आम्ही दिलीच आहे..

परत? कदाचित येइलही तो

पण महारोग्याच्या वस्तीत, तो राहिला असेल तर त्याला पुन्हा..

प्रवेश द्यावा की नाही, याचा विचार करावा लागेल,

आमच्या ट्रस्टींना,

पत्रव्यवहार चालु आहे.. दुसर्‍या मुर्तीसाठी

पण तुर्त गाभार्‍याचे दर्शन घ्या.

तसे म्हटले तर, गाभार्‍याचे महत्व अंतिम असत,

कारण गाभारा सलामत तर देव पचास !!

लॉजिक आणि स्वप्न

मी आता ठरवले आहे, शांतपणे दंगा करायचा
खूप मोठ्यंदा हळूच हसायचे, आणि गप्प बसून जोरात गायचे

गाउन दमल्यावर मी झोपायला गेलो, थोडावेळ पडून राहिलो
शेवटी झोप येत नाही म्हणून, वैतागून झोपी गेलो

नंतर तिथे मला,एक नसलेला माणूस दिसला
माझ्या जवळ येऊन मला, तो लांबूनच म्हणाला

"मी तुला इथे दिसलो असा नसलेला
हे प्लीज़ तू सांगू नकोस कोणाला"

मी म्हणालो, मी हे कुणाला का सांगू नको ?
तो म्हणाला, मी नियम मोडला म्हणून कटकट नको ! (नोट:- नसलेला असल्याचा नियम)

मी म्हणालो, प्रत्येक नियमाला असतात अपवाद,
तो म्हणाला, ह्या नियमालाही आहे अपवाद !
(नोट:- विचार करा "प्रत्येक नियमाला असतात अपवाद" चा अपवाद पॅरडॉक्स आहे))

म्हणालो ठीक आहे, मी कोणाला नाही सांगणार
सांगितले तर फक्त मी सगळ्यांना सांगणार

म्हणाला सगळ्यांना सांगितले तर ठीक आहे
पण कुणाला सांगितले तर मात्र प्रॉब्लेम आहे

मी म्हणालो, तू असा कसा आहेस नसलेला
तो म्हणाला, सांगतो तुला कसा आहे मी असा नसलेला

"जो माणूस असतो तो असतो तिथे असलेला,
जो माणूस नसतो तो नसतो तिथे असलेला

म्हणूनच जेव्हा मी नसतो इथे असलेला
तेव्हा, मी असतो इथे नसलेला ! "

तो म्हणाला पुढे, "समजावले हे मी तुला
करतो हात पुढे, पैसे दे तू आता मला"

मी म्हणालो, मी कधी म्हणालो की "मी तुला पैसे देईन" ?
तो म्हणाला, खोटारडा आत्ताच म्हणालस की "मी तुला पैसे देईन !" (नोट:- वरचे वाक्य बघा, खरच म्हणाला !)

You must be the Change you want to see in the world

Never before I have felt helpless ! I was always optimistic with Democracy, Constitution and a Free Liberal system and gave importance to the fact that if we want we can change the people who are unaccountable. 

But I  was wrong ! I am angry ! I feel anguished ! The government has let us down. The bureacracy las let us down. The entire system has let us down. 

After every such incident we point finger at our neighbor. Under the rhetoric, we try to cover the problem that our own system has. Pakistan is our enemy and the enemy is bound to attack. Why arent we capable of countering these attacks ?

I have every right to be anguished with Manmohan Singh, Shivraj Patil, Vilasrao Deshmukh, R.R.Patil and other politicians. The proud chief minister who celebrated 8th year in office should feel ashamed that he did nothing in 8 years to stop attacks on his state. It is a myth that I as a voter have power to change the government. But who do I elect ? If I have to change the Manmohan Singh leadership, I will have to vote for Advani who is even worse. The same person who just a day ago was targeting Karkare and the ATS for "targetting" terrorists. If I have to change Vilasrao, should I elect Gopinath Munde ? Or should I vote for Raj Thackeray? 

And will this problem get solved by changing the politicians ? What about the bureacracy ?  I remember the CNN-IBN coverage few months ago where they had exposed lack of security on the coastal India. Customs Officers were casual, Police were sleeping. Nobody acted on it. Even while reading the charges on the convicts of the 93 bomb blast case, I always felt if 1 person would have done his job correctly, that incident could have been avoided. Hence I feel that more than Congress, more than BJP, it is the system which is responsible and people who made this system the way it is. I hold you responsible for this and I hold myself responsible for this !

When I paid Rs. 100 to the police man for getting my passport verification done, I had sowed seed for this attack. 

When I paid Rs. 50 to the traffic police when I was caught driving without license, I had paid him for not doing his job.

When I paid Rs. 7000 to the government officer for transfer will, I had become part of this inefficient system.

As Mahatma Gandhi has said "You must be the Change you want to see in the world". If I want my police force to be righteous, I have to righteous. If I want my politicians to be accountable, I have to be accountable to the democracy. If I dont want the bureacrats to have a "chalta hai" attitude, I should get rid of it first. 

So next time when I see a security guard letting someone enter a mall even after his machine beeps, I am going to object. Next time when I see something suspicious, I am going to report. Next time when I see some area is prone to attack, I am going to report. Next time I am not going to bribe someone for not doing his job and object when I see someone not doing his job.

These actions might be small but If each one of us can collectively do this, we can change the system. Lets get rid of the empty rhetoric and start taking practical actions.
